Websites Should be simple

How to use the Status Manager in the Reflex Content Management System

One of the most useful tools within the Reflex Content Management System is the Status Manager, which displays all the main configuration files for the website.  This can be accessed by clicking the ‘Website Status’ option in the ‘Website Management’ section of Reflex.

With the Status Manager tool you can check that all the important configuration files for your site are present, valid and working correctly.  If there is any problem with these files it could cause major problems with the function and appearance of your site.  To avoid this you can use the Status Manager to identify where these problems may be.

The Status Manager section of the Reflex Content Management System is a valuable tool as it allows the user/website owner to regularly check the technical, ‘background’ files of their site in a simple, user-friendly way.  So instead of having to rely on (and pay for!) IT support over the phone, you can identify any technical issues yourself.

The Status Manager has several features that help make it both user-friendly and extremely effective.  These include:
•    Simple checklist style layout to help identify issues quickly
•    On-screen guides and explanations written in plain English – no jargon!
•    Detailed presentation and plain description of all configuration files
•    Easy-to-use file validation tool
•    Comprehensive Help section to guide you through all aspects and functions of the Status Manager

These unique features help to make our Reflex system a simple yet highly powerful content management system that can be used by anyone.  Within this system, the Status Manager is an easy-to-use, responsive and powerful tool offering a wide range of benefits to the user.  These include:
•    Allowing users to take control of the technical side of their website
•    The identification of technical issues quickly
•    The ability to view configuration files in a separate window
•    Building user confidence and technical knowledge

The first section of the Status Manager is the Website Status tab.  With this you can quickly check that the most common website configuration files exist.  These are split into Essential Files and Beneficial Files.

If the files exist a green tick will be displayed, otherwise a red cross will indicate the file could not be found.  In the event of a red cross a message will be displayed detailing what, if any, affect the missing files may have on your website.

The next tab allows you to view the Configuration Files:

This section displays all of the configuration files for the website.  It shows the time the file was last modified as well as detailing what type of file it is and the full file path. By selecting a file in the list you can view the full description of it at the bottom of the page.  This will help develop your technical knowledge and increase your confidence.

You can also view each individual file by double clicking the file once it is highlighted in the list.  This will open the file in a new browser window so it can be viewed in more detail.

The ‘Validate File’ tab enables the user to check all the configuration files in an easy-to-use drop-down menu format.

As you can see from the above example, this very simple method provides you with a lot of useful information.  To check a file simply select it from the drop-down menu.  The page will then refresh and display the full name of the file, the number of errors found, the number of warnings related to that file and whether the file is W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) valid.

Below this the errors and warnings are presented clearly and in detail.  Here you can see the exact location of the error or warning within the file and what type of error or warning it is.  It is important to note that not all errors and warnings will result in problems with your site. Sometimes files do tend to have minor errors or warnings attached to them.
